High Alert for New Covid-19 Variants – The Department of Health (DOH) has directed the Bureau of Quarantine (BOQ) to intensify screening at points of entry for visitors from countries with new Covid-19 variants, specifically KP.2 and KP.3.

These variants, descendants of JN.1, have prompted the BOQ to issue Bureau Memorandum No. 2024-48, placing all stations on heightened alert. Singapore recently reported a surge in Covid-19 cases, attributing about two-thirds of the new cases to these variants. Despite a slight increase in Covid-19 cases in the Philippines, with an average of 125 cases per day from May 7 to 13, the DOH maintains that the country remains at low risk.

Infectious disease expert Rontgene Solante, president of the Philippine College of Physicians, reassured the public that the new Covid-19 variants pose low health risks. To minimize the spread of these variants, it is advisable to follow health protocols, such as wearing masks in crowded places, practicing good hand hygiene, and getting vaccinated. Additionally, staying informed about travel advisories and potential symptoms can help protect individuals and the broader community.
