Anybody would be nervous about attending a Senate hearing, especially if it involves drugs. Maricel Soriano faces felt exactly that way when she appeared on May 7 at a hearing led by Senator Bato de la Rosa, chairman of the Public Order and Dangerous Drugs committee.
The hearing was about the veteran actress’s alleged involvement in a drug issue, with her name appearing on the PDEA’s target list in March 2012. The document also implicated the President. Accompanied by fellow actor-turned-Senator Robin Padilla, who wore a modern barong Tagalog, Maricel walked confidently into the hearing room, though she was visibly uneasy. The 59-year-old actress admitted she was scared and anxious, saying, “Hindi ko kasi alam kung bakit ako naroon (I didn’t know why I was there in the first place).”
Senator de la Rosa asked the questions respectfully, which helped Maricel relax. It seemed she had been briefed on how to answer questions directly. De la Rosa’s questions were not intended to unsettle her or make her reveal more than necessary. Maricel answered clearly and confidently: no stuttering, no long pauses, and no dramatic reactions.
Under oath, Maricel stated she was telling the truth. She acknowledged owning unit 46-C at the Rizal Tower in Rockwell but said she sold it the same year.
