President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has officially endorsed Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero as the new Senate President following the resignation of Senator Migz Zubiri.
In his first statement since the leadership change in the Senate, BBM backs Escudero’s legislative track record and dedication to public service. “I extend my support to the new Senate President, Chiz Escudero. His legislative record and commitment to public service have distinguished him as a dedicated leader,” Marcos announced on Tuesday, May 21.
Zubiri resigned from his position on Monday, May 20, after it became clear he no longer had the necessary support to remain Senate President. He partly attributed his abrupt exit to his decision to allow a Senate investigation into alleged links between President Marcos and illegal drug activities. “You know we’re not enemy of the powers that be. But because we’re not following instructions, we were targeted,” Zubiri stated.
Despite four hearings led by Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, the investigation failed to find evidence implicating President Marcos in illegal drug trade activities. Senators, including Escudero, dismissed the allegations as hearsay.
The Senate is predominantly composed of a supermajority bloc that supports President Marcos. Historically, the President’s allies in Congress do not act against his interests in leadership matters without his approval.
Marcos acknowledged Zubiri’s commendable tenure and expressed confidence that under Escudero’s leadership, the Senate would continue to prioritize transformative legislation to achieve a “Bagong Pilipinas”
