CEBU, Philippines – The Office of the Ombudsman has ordered the preventive suspension of Bohol Governor Erico Aris Aumentado and 68 other officials for six months without pay. This action stems from the construction and operation of the controversial Captain’s Peak Resort on the Chocolate Hills. The suspension, signed by Special Prosecutor and Ombudsman Officer-In-Charge Edilberto Sandoval on May 22, aims to prevent potential tampering of evidence and interference with the investigation.
Governor Aumentado, describing himself as “collateral damage,” asserted that the suspension was due to the negligence of others rather than corruption. Vice Governor Dionisio Victor Balite will act as governor during the suspension. The officials, including those from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), are consulting with their lawyers about a possible appeal. The investigation revealed that the officials tolerated the resort’s operation and expansion within the protected zones of the Chocolate Hills.
